Târgu Jiu, November 27, 2023 – RenewAcad - Counseling and Professional Training Academy for renewable energy sources, and OMV Petrom, the largest energy company in Southeastern Europe, have joined forces to establish a training center in Târgu Jiu (Gorj County), aiming to support the professional reconversion of miners. At this center, starting Monday, December 4, 2023, the first course within the RenewAcad project will take place in Târgu Jiu, through which 100 people from mining will obtain the specialization of Installer for solar photovoltaic systems.
Specifically, the project, which began on Monday, December 4, 2023, is funded by OMV Petrom and is implemented with the support of the “Fundatia Sanse Egale” and RESS – Renewable Energy School of Skills, the largest network of training centers for renewable sources in Romania.
"The transition to the green economy cannot be achieved without specialists mastering the latest technologies in the field. Through our strategy for 2030, we will invest approximately 3.7 billion euros to ensure cleaner energy for a better life. We are in the process of developing an installed capacity of photovoltaics of over 1 GW, representing over 10% of Romania's estimated solar capacity. Through collaboration with CE Oltenia, we will build photovoltaic parks with a total capacity of approximately 450 MW. We are thus contributing to the reduction of emissions and the creation of a new, more sustainable industry in Oltenia," stated Ionuț-Cristian Ciubotaru, Vice-President, Business Development, Downstream Gas & Power at OMV Petrom.
"RenewAcad is a long-term project, implemented in several phases, the first of which is the one presented today, which represents a bridge between education and professional training in the field of renewable energy sources for over 100 CE Oltenia employees. Programs like this give us confidence that Romania is ready for the transition to a greener future," said Sebastian-Petre Enache, director of RESS - Renewable Energy School of Skills.
The professional reconversion initiative of miners from the Jiu Valley to the renewable energy sector, carried out by RenewAcad, will continue in 2024 with another 100 individuals. From 2019 to the present, RenewAcad has been involved in introducing new occupational and trade standards and training over 10,000 professionals for the energy transition.
RenewAcad center in Rovinari has already prepared 54 trainees to become specialists in the green professions of the future.
On March 14, 2024, an event was held at RenewAcad center in Rovinari to mark the intermediate stage milestone for the target of 100 specialists trained through professional reconversion courses adapted to the requirements of a growing sustainable economy at the training center implemented within the Oltenia Energy Complex.

Progress within the RenewAcad - Târgu Jiu project is evident and impressive, with the project quickly surpassing 50% of the target due to the high interest shown by up to three times oversubscription of those wishing to take these courses. Due to the large number of requests and increased interest, there is consideration for possibly organizing a new training session for new groups of trainees starting in September 2024.
To date, a total of 54 individuals have successfully completed the training courses. Among the 54 trainees, 11 have completed university studies, while the rest have completed high school or post-secondary vocational schools.
Regarding the occupational profile of the trainees, there was a predominant presence of workers in the electrical field: 16 electricians, maintenance and repair electricians, or those involved in the operation of power plants and electrical substations. Additionally, other professions were represented in the trainee group, such as mechanical fitters (12), operators (8), formation leaders (5), as well as specialists in various fields such as engineers, excavator operators, programmers, fuel shift supervisors, locomotive engineers, or workshop supervisors.
In this context, the event on March 14 marked the completion of the fourth professional training course within the RenewAcad - Târgu Jiu project, where 100 people from the coal industry will specialize in installing solar photovoltaic systems. This moment represents a remarkable achievement for all those involved.
